A terrible awful no-good very bad night

KDH was nestled all snug in her bed last Thursday night when her dreams of bourbon and fantasy baseball were shattered by thumping and bumping coming from the town house next door. See, there's a shared wall in these townhouses, and although I've heard thumping and bumping before, its usually of the type you just try to ignore (apartment dwellers, you KNOW what I mean).

Through my 3am foggy haze though, it quickly became apparent this wasn't a typical night, and what seemed like a very bad night for me was a whole heck of a lot worse for my next door neighbor. That "pop pop pop" I heard was NOT fireworks, and I quickly called the police.

Three minutes later, the police called to be buzzed in the front gate (that seems like a security flaw, huh?) and I stuck my head outside my house just long enough to tell them it was next door and they better hurry up and figure out what was going on. I could see and hear enough to know the police were breaking down the door. And then -- crash! Out the French doors and off the balconey on the front side of the house went a guy. Now I KNEW things were as serious as I thought they were.
Twenty more police cars showed up. They closed the street. The hook and ladder showed up. Then the crime scene investigators. Then an ambulance. The ambulance wasn't hurrying. Uh oh.

After 20 minutes of watching 157 random police officers wander around, I ventured out to get some information. The fresh faced Atlanta beat cop that I had pointed next door let me know that my neighbor was completely dead, it looked drug related or maybe a crime of passion, that the man jumping off the balcony had done the shooting, but was firmly in police custody. That's a lot of news to take in at 3:45 am.

I didn't know my neighbor at all, but I was pretty surprised to hear this -- things were always quiet next door (except for his propensity to break into gospel song at random moments of the day) and I certainly don't live in a typical "bad" neighborhood. I guess random bad things happen everywhere, and I was pretty glad I was OK and had just restocked my homestead with a fresh bottle of bourbon.
I was going to need it. My responsibilities for the rest of the evening including talking to the police detectives (who showed up in fedoras and trench coats, I kid you not), going down to Police Headquarters and making a statement (watching the official police typist hunt and peck out my sentences at a snail's pace at 4:23am nearly made ME commit a felony) and buzzing at least 743 police cars into the front gate at 15 minute intervals.
The house next door is cleaned up and already on the rental market. I plan on going to the arraingment to get the FULL story -- I am a professional researcher at heart, after all. And unexpected benefit of all of this is that my driveway next to the "murder house" is the new after work, drink a glass of wine, hangout and chat place for me and my neighbors -- none of whom I had talked to in the two years I've lived here for this event. I guess murder really brings people together!
You can watch the videos on the links below. When they say "some residents" or "some neighbors" called it in -- you can just substitute "KDH". The chick they interviewed doesn't come to the driveway parties -- she really seems to have an axe to grind with renters like me!

YEAH!!! I AM THE FIRST TO POST.

Just a few things to add:

1. The neighbor on the news report, stole your thunder KDH.

2. Had you not called the police there may have been a murderer on the loose and the story could have been featured on AMW.

3. That sure calls for alcohol consumption.

4. Did you hand out business cards to the police force?

GREAT JOB. The pictures, the story, and the article made me feel like I was actually there.

Perhaps the town house will be taking admissions and giving tours. Maybe gram can see something new.

OH MY GOSH!!! KDH you were so close in harms way, that is way more scary than we need!
I think you need to come home, now. The only thing that happens in EA is corruption in the highway dept and hooligan shennanigans on halloween!
Your account of the event was top notch. And I too felt like I was right in the heat of the battle.
I am glad you are safe, and I am glad you had bourbon!

KDH, just a couple of quick questions??? Is the woman in the #2 pink hat your friend? Is she coming to Sweet/suite Holtzapalooza?
Also I am just thinking if your neighbor was the local supplier, a lot of people might be knocking on your door, looking for there doobee's? It might be a great opportunity to meet people! Im just saying, trying to find something positive that can come from this madness, like a new friend!

Anonymous said...

OH MY GOSH KDH!!! Did you have to I.D. the perp in a line-up?? You should get some type of citizen of the year award, or at least a discount in rent.

Anonymous said...

Everyone please join me in wishing Auntie B a VERY happy Birthday!!!!

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday MOM!

Anonymous said...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to beat my sissy with the exlamation points.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for my birthday wishes, girls..
Its beer, pizza and a yankee game!
KDH, how did the owners clean, spackle, and de-criminalize that apartment so quickly? Was Mr Fixxitt called in? cuz seriously he is the only guy I know who could do that. He has wondertwin powers!

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday,Antie B! Hope your day will be extra special.

As for me, I will just be sitting around in EA worrying about My daughter.

Anonymous said...

How do I get Kazuo Matsui off my roster since he is on the DL??

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday Antie B!
I have no idea how they replaced that carpet so quickly, but I didn't see Unkie G anywhere down here!

Anonymous said...

You have to drop him if you don't want him anymore.

Anonymous said...

That was a horrifying story... I had to read it in intervals (that is I kept running out of beer in my pint galss and needed a refill/s). I'm glad you're okay. It's eventslike that where friendships are made.

Put Matsui on DL (when in classic mode on edit team), unless you already have a player on DL.

Weeks hit a dinger...

KDH...Holy Crap! (Can I saw that?)
AuntieB...another birthday? Holy Crap! (can I saw that?)

Anonymous said...

A very big H.B. to my little sis and hoping that your day is a dandy. The good news from Atlanta is that all of that did not happen when Auntie and I were in town. I had enuf excitement at the BBQ. The idea of themand their fedoras, love the style, walking around taking statements would be a little too much. It would have been a better story if she had awakened, called the cops, and then found out that she was only dreaming. Then, after it happens, she chickens out and flies to DC for the weekend. And by the way, all of that corruption is in Marilla, a full township away. go, go, go AJ Burnett!!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for all your well wishes, family. But I think we need a happy birthday blog!!!

Anonymous said...

I had a most enjoyable birthday!
Thanks for the invite out nephew, maybe next week??? The best thing about birthdays is you can pretty much celebrate them whenever or where ever.
Had GG over for some plain chicken wings, cake and ice cream.
Enjoy thursday one and all, because what is on the horizon
yup thats right, FRIDAY!
cookie of to seattle on monday, I told her to tell Ichiro to get it togother!

Anonymous said...

KayDH, UG paid you quite the compliment last evening during the party festivites, He said you were a very shrewd trader, very shrewd, and he would not be surprised if you win it all!!
not sure what you would win..
but you would win nonetheless

Anonymous said...

Ah yes, in response to the birthday girl +1 final comment, the trophy for winning the first annual Holtz family fantasy b-ball league is currently in design. I gave the task to Auntie with the primary guideline that it must be similar to the Cup of Lord Stanley providing recognition to the winner, who shall retain it for one year, but room to honor subsequent winners. She has promised that it will be ready by October.

Anonymous said...

I can only imagine what we're in store for, considering cuzin' Jnna, pulled the plug and wouldn't let my dear aunt and dearest wifey play baseball with us.
Be gentle with us Auntie P, no squirrel fur attached to the winners cup. It be great if we could drink out of it.

Anonymous said...

I want everyone to know that we will have a Holtz Fantasy Football League, all interested participants should e-mail Austinpapa to register.

I continue to get beat up about the baseball league, so I'm giving everyone fair warning. We already have 3 interested teams, so please sign up fast before Jimmy takes his spot.

Anonymous said...

Count Sandra and me in.

I'm just funnin' with you. We know it was your sister who did it.

Anonymous said...

Phil Hughes has a perfect game going.

Anonymous said...

I just need clarification from my dear cuz cuz Jff. Will your lovely wife and you have one team or will the both of you have separate teams?

I turned the Sabres game off. UGH.

Anonymous said...

So I am in a doggfight with ZR!
I thought he had it with Dusty Mcgowan last evening, wow that was touch and go
Happy Gray and Gloomy friday everyone.
The Sabres, snffff, that was SAD!
So one of my favorite reality shows is Top Chef, (bravo network)
and this week they had to do a menu based on there favorite movie! And of course, one team of chef's did a Christmas Story, so they could cook duck I am quessing, but they were not knowledgable at all about the movie! kind of sad!
So Adm is trying to dump Mariano, and he has 2 count em 2 saves, what is up with that!
And AP will be crafting an award for the HFBBL??? Will it be flocked? I love flocking!

Anonymous said...

Just got tickets to see Pearl Jam this summer!!! WOOHOO!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Seperate teams of course. In a head to head league you can get at least 14 teams.

Congrats Jll, hopefully I'll be seeing them at Bonnaroo this year (if Lil' Ricky "the quiet one" comes through).

13 days before I get a mighty taco again.

Anonymous said...

I like welch's grape jam. mmmm

Anonymous said...

I learn something new everyday, I did not know that mighty taco meals are calendar managed?

Anonymous said...

Since the Atlanta crime blog was such a hit, I think that there needs to be one on sleepy little Tonawanda yesterday. Stuff like that never happened at the science dept. at THS when Mr. Czysz was in charge. I may never score any fantasy points again. My team batting average for the last two days has been .071

Anonymous said...

Wanna make a trade... again???

Mr. Cyst in a science class???

Yanks took a thumpin' tonight... anyone going to pick up Latroy Hawkins tomorrow morning?

Anonymous said...

Happy Saturday to one and all
I love Saturday's. The possibilites seem endless of what to accomplish, then you have a second cup of coffee and it turns into a blow off day!
The T-Wand certainly has had its share of crime lately, hasnt it??
Basketball, baseball today. NU playing a double header today at sal maglie, for anyone who wants to be at a ball park.
enjoy saturday one and all, it will be another 7 days before we see it again, and another 7 after that before jff can go to MT, and another 7 at that before I get paid and then look its MAY!

Anonymous said...

Where does the time go? It felt like it was just March and now it's May already. Talk about April being a lost month.

Zach and I are holding down the fort today (most likely Playstation or maybe the batting cages) and the women in our clan are going out into the harsh world to bring us some supper... caribou or maybe some elk. Can anyone share an elk recipe with us? Auntie P, do you have an old elk recipe you can share?

Enjoy the foggy, gloomy day

at least its not snowing... Hmmmmm.

Anonymous said...

Quite proud of myself spending the morning attempting to rake up the tons of desbris that the winter was kind enuf to deposit. Don''t like the looks of the standings in the AL east at all. Time to restore order to that universe and get the pretenders back in the pack where they belong.

Anonymous said...

Auntie has a great recipe for gnu fazoo, which could probably be adjusted for elk or caribou. I don't think that caribou is available in May though; only months with an r.

Anonymous said...

I just checked my calendar and it's April 5th. Darn I am so confused. Is it April or is it May? Who is on second? What's on first?

Anonymous said...

and I'm having a hard time finding a teaching gig in WNY? I have never run from MY school in a marijuana induced haze and led the cops on a high speed chase. Maybe that's my problem!

Im here. it has been to long since i dropped by. i lost the website to your page and had to go leaps and bounds to find it. i came across other holtz blogs who were not to happy to see me. not sure how the weather is there but we have a winter storm watch looming until tomorrow evening. i hear the pope will be in your area next week. any big plans to see him?
what is the latest on your former governor? that was "big news" out here.

Anonymous said...

Fargofan!!! Welcome back to the fold! We have missed you! Hope your family is well! Our Holtz family blog is always glad and excited to see you!
Elliott SPITzer, our former gov is big news here too! Really big, and his blind replacement even bigger. The Pope will be saying Mass in Yankee Stadium, and that is a bit of a road trip from us.
Great baseketball games tonite.
Oliver, not surprising, picked the winner in Memphis! Go Tigers.
The chaos in the AL east is a parallel universe I tell ya.
Fargo, we are so sorry spring has eluded North Dakota, but hey May is right around the corner.
Please note the time that this post is being added as that is another story in itself!

Anonymous said...

As I was studying all night for my SPHR exam, I found myself not able to fall asleep. I tried counting sheep but was unsuccessful. I turned the tv on only to find infomercial after infomercial and then became interested in the show "cheaters".

But my dear mother came into my room to use the computer and was completely overjoyed that fargo has returned.

So now were going to breakfast. Is Athena's open?

Anonymous said...

I don't understand the scoring in this league. The score is 7-3 STILL. But, I am winning in every category minus strike outs.

Unkie, you put up a good fight. Nice Game Unkie.

Anonymous said...

Wow, such activity last night on the blog. If I had known, I would have dropped in too. I was up writing proposals -- its my favorite time of year. Or not.

Athena's breakfast sounds REALLY good

Anonymous said...

UMMMMMMHHH Athena's!! Do they serve Caribou for breakfast? I have this craving. I blame my nphw.
Hey Fargo--good to hear from you. Spring comes late up where you are but it will be here before you know it. This AL east is troubling, but I do enjoy seeing who is holding up the rest of the division on their brawny shoulders. This fantasy baseball stuff is confusing. I change my lineup and always seem to have the wrong people in while my worthy opponent apparently has only two pitchers but they seem to pitch and win every other day.

Anonymous said...

Whatever happened to the Fixxitts?
Did the Mister finally reach the point of frustration which led to his trashing it permanently? Or can't it be found under the pile of postit notes?

Anonymous said...

I am not sure what the fixxits use there computer for??? My sister did call me on friday to wish me a happy birthday? I quess she had me confused with aunt bessie?
cookie off to seattle tomorrow, so that is kind of excititng.
KDH, I have forwarded the video to one and all, and everyone thinks the atl detectives resemble Shaft.
Now that is kind of funny.
sunny nice beautiful very good day enjoy it one and all because what is tomorrow, :(

Anonymous said...

Is tomorrow May?

Anonymous said...

Jff~I do not have an old elk recipe to share but I live with an old elk that I'd be happy to share with you. How long do you want him for?

Anonymous said...

Just checking in to see how my other holtz family is doing. snow is lightly falling here. my son taught me how to bookmark a page so hopefully i wont be absent anymore. but as the old saying goes absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Happy Monday AM to one and all!
I am attacking the week with a positive attitude!
Travel safe Sndra, from far far away, is that like being in Oz?
Cookie is traveling today also, Jnna and UC will both be on the 400 going in oposite directions! And me I will be on the 33. that sums up today's travel log.
big basketball game tonite?? I hope Olivers team wins! Bison's home opener on Friday, anyone going?
does anyone care about hockey anymore?
Fargo take heart, they are calling for snow showers for us next weekend, so spring is slow in coming everywhere!
have a wonderful monday mi familia!

Anonymous said...

I am outraged. Not an old elk, perhaps an elderly Rotarian. Hope that everyone travels safely and I can recover from the beating I took at the hands of nc jnn. Another nice day; keep them comin'

Anonymous said...

Well with Sandra away that explains why Jeff hasn't posted on the blog.

I have officially banned my mother from the computer, in hopes of stealing another win this week.

Anonymous said...

I'm here, I'm here... I was just drowning in my pillow because my beautiful wife has left me for 4 daze... (to Wisconsin no less, how does one compete) and how shall I survive without her? Maybe some marinated caribou would help. And Auntie your ol' elk can stay with us anytime you need the extra space, we have an overhang out back that'll keep the rain off him/ it.

Moose came up big last night for the Yanks!!! Mmmmmm... maybe some moose chips?

I am all caught up on the blog entries that i missed when i was "away". please add me to the list for fantasy football. I figured with the high price of gas these days we can find where the cheapest gas is. I paid today $3.13. What is it everywhere else?

Anonymous said...

$3.43 at the Sunoco on Delaware and Kenmore, good people there... good folk indeed.

Anonymous said...

Back from Seattle. Beautiful place, but it rained the whole time. Go figure.
The space needle isn't as big as I thought it would be. Maybe I am just a travel snob.
I had some pretty awesome seafood though! YUM!!!!

Happy wed! I think next to friday, I love my wed! It is close enough to friday to talk about friday, which is always good, TV is good on wed, I am just a wed fan!
FARGOFAN, thanks for getting up to speed on blog comments, notice we always asked where you were??
gas at the TOPS on Niagara St using my bonus card was 3.44 this AM.
I used to commnent on gas prices everyday, but its too frustrating, so see your 3.14 is a bargain!
enjoy the day!

Anonymous said...

Howdy from WI--last day--fly home tomorrow through Detroit. Gas here in Watertown,WI is 3.39...Fargo still wins...Jff, got the cheesehat for Joe!

Anonymous said...

$3.43 at Getty on the corner of Colvin and Highland. Fargo Rules!!!

Zach's first practice (freezing... ok, ok very cold) went really well. He was really strokin' the ball.

I'm crappin' the bed in two fantasy leagues right now. Where for art tho fantasy gods?

Anonymous said...

Jeff, don't worry I am totally convinced that AustinsPapa is cheating, Somehow. In fact, I had a dream that cousin Adam called up and wanted to drop out of the league because he had evidence that AustinsPapa was conducting illegal moves.

Just wait until we go head to head in Week 4. His computer time will be seriously limited!

Anonymous said...

I'm lucky I squeeked out a point from the Bronx Bombers, She cheats too. So watch out!

Anonymous said...

Serious accusations are out there. KDH, we may need a bar graph to show these injustices by AUSTINS PAPA. Or better yet, a pie chart... Mmmmmmm... pie.

Have a good one everybody.

Thursday, I am not a fan of thursday, as it is now the end of the week and everything I wanted and hoped to accomplish this week, I now realize, I fell short! thats dissapointing.
So I have my BIG job interview today with the president of millard fillmore suburban! You know the redsoxx fan.. So I went out shopping last nite, to get something new, that makes me look calm, assertive, in control, intelligent, compassionate, and whatever else they are looking for, and my phone rings in ladies hose, and its my nphw, calling from a freezing ball diamond, having the time of his life, watching grounders! He too wanted to talk to his uncle re the HFBBL.
Since the inception of the HFFBBL, he has not been so popular!
I ended up buying new socks.
have a great day!
I will keep you all posted as I leap up the corporate ladder!!!

Anonymous said...

I FEEL KDH IS CALM, ASSERTIVE

hey jnna- we need you to work some hr magic and get my wife a part time job as a dietician at your nursing home. you can create a job for her, can't you?

ADAM AMY OLIVER, are you coming to western new york!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

So I am home from my interview and I read Adam's post???? Could WNY become Oliver's new home???

Anonymous said...

So I called Jenna to tell her what I read and of course she called Adam right away, but I have nothing else????
KDH, are you at the Masters?
Word on my interview, does anyone have any idea how hard it it to focus when a life size picture of davidortiz is on the wall?? A bostonredsuxx lunchbox on the desk.
But I was strong and focused! I may have made one tactical error, at the end of the interview I thanked Mr Lane for his time, and the opportunity and said GO YANKEES.
Should I clean out my desk now???

Anonymous said...

Cousin Adam, a few suprising developments since we last talked; 1. I'm very well liked where I work, or at least I would like to think so. I spoke to the Food Service Director who was very excited to hear about Amy. He is really good friends with the Food Service Supervisor of all our facilities. He called her right away and she said as soon as jenna gets the resume forward it over to me, ASAP.

2. The Administrator, who likes the job I do and respects me, at least I hope so, anyway said, jenna "hand me the resume when you get it."

So either A. were really desperate or B. they want to meet Oliver or C. they want a qualified dietician in one of our facilities.

Thanks for contacting me, you know I got your back.

OH and FYI, We also have a day care center around the corner from the facility, Duck Duck Goose.

Anonymous said...

So apparently my mom doesn't like my post. She said I am being conceited. I guess she can talk trash, she is kicking my butt this week.

Anonymous said...

whats up with jenna?

Anonymous said...

That's sooo bad...

Welcome home Adm and Amy, WNY would be proud to have you back in our fold. Then maybe I won't have to pay so much in taxes.

GO YANKEES!!! Pleeeeease don't be swept by the Royals... Ugh!

Sandra's home... no one call me tonight... I'll be busy.

Auntie is pressuring me to get tickets for the Ironpigs on the 17th. Dast I?? Looks like the weather for the Bisons won't be the greatest for the next few days. Enjoy the weekend all. I still want to know Georgie's secret. He seems to be the only one dooing consistently well in Fantasy. Anyone watching baseball on the tube this evening?

Whatver happened to the Fixxitts?? We've heard a lot more from Fargo of late. Did Auntie B have to learn a "Red sox nation" handshake as part of the interview process?

Nice evening last night for the Bisons game (lost 4-1), instead, we went to church last night for spaghetti dinner and youth talent show... good time.

Auntie is using the old reliable "there will be no trip until the yard is finished", so I may very well be out raking in the snow tomorrow. Keep the faith auntie B. sometimes it just takes time for decisions to come down the pipeline. I know that Amy waited for what seemed to be an inordinate amount of time before her current employer finally got back to her.And we all know how noble all socks fans are, so don't worry. Mom claims that there were many pix taken at last night's fish fry. Blog to follow? Today is the official celebration of Dan and Eric's 21st birthdays so we will be convening at the racetrack in Hamburg to celebrate their "legalness". How time flies. Have a good one all.

Howdy family -- I emerge from aunder the corporate paperwork! brutal proposal deadline was quickly followed by an out of town junket, so the stuff really piled up around here. I will not be able to call myself "fargo fan" anymore. The fargo Holtz's are getting ready to call Tennessee our new home this summer. They are playing Sweet Caroline now at the game. Bisons up to bat, can’t see the score, I will need to bring in some binoculars

the above observation was just sent to me from cookie, who can see the Bison's field from her office window.

My office smells like pee, as the residents rooms above my office, toilets overflowed!

Kdh, thank you thank you thank you for making my house so pleasant. Unkie George is walking around citing his team and telling them they need to shape up or ship out.

Another Bisons afternoon game tomorrow and all week. So, the kids and I are going tomorrow. Hopefully it'll be decent out.

I am SOOOOOOO mad right now, I was just at Tops (Sandra threw me off my game by calling my cell) and I forgot to give the guy my Tops bonus card. Which, was the only reason I bought Bass beer. I missed out on saving $5. I am seething. Red I tell ya. Red.

This might be a blog.

Poor JT. You never want to miss out on potential savings on a beer purchase. I just found out that the Ironpigs are 0-11 at this point of the season. Seems that the Ottawa Lynx did not leave them a lot of talent. Do you think that they will sell out thurs. nite? am I taking a chance not buying tickets in advance. was having a great time going back and forth between the sox game and the yanks game, but it's now time for DWTS so I am out of luck. Enjoy the rest of the week all

And OBTW, I will be blessing the Holy Ground known as Yankee Stadium, and the new build also.
So all you Red Sox fans, my super holy powers will thrwart your feble attempts at cursing the Yankess, and OBTW

Hey Pope... thanks for blessing the NEW Yankee Stadium. And thanks foor stopping by our humble "blob".

Big game today v. the SkyChiefs at 1PM... GO BISONS!!! the kids and I will be up there at 12:30. I'm using the entertainment book and sitting in general admission. I'm sure we'll be able to move in.

IRONPIGGS 0-11... WOW!!! Those dirty rotten Lynx-folk from Ottawa, it figures they would gut their team. Now we have to root for them. It's like Buffalo's sister team.

here goes after reading every activity that this family is involved in i feel that alot of good stuff is being overlooked. studies prove that we only use 10% of our brains and i believe we are using 90% on this blog which blows my mind well 10% of it anyway. i just connected with my cousins and that was something else but luckily only needed 10% of my brain for it leaving my 90% very busy trying to compose this message. but tonight taught me one thing its family is important and keep jenna away from me love aunt sue
