Conch or Konk??

After standing up in a wedding in Ft. Lauderdale for one of my best friends, it was off to Key West for some fun in the sun!

The 3.5 hour road trip almost came to a breaking point when my Canadian friend (you all remember Summy right?) insisted that the "ch" in conch should be pronounced. At that point I made it my personal mission in Key West to prove her wrong.

We rented scooters to get around the island. Best idea ever! I am thinking of buying one for home, but I don't think the Buffalo community will be as accommodating since this beauty only got up to 35mph.

Our first stop was to find some conch fritters to prove Summy wrong.
We thought this place would be right up our alley and no lie the owner was Canadian.

As we all know conch is pronounced Konk and I had the whole shack letting Summy know this. But to her credit she still refused to pronounce it that way.

Either way the fritters were pretty darn good. i love photos of food...dont you? I think the rooster expected a  snack, but I'm not very good about sharing my food.

Next up was the Southern most point in the continental US. Only 90 miles to Cuba!! I heard a lot of tourists say "Wow thats not far. I bet I could swim that." How quickly they forget about that poor old lady who was almost eaten by jellyfish on her quest to swim that same route! I kindly reminded everyone.

Then we hit up Fort Zachary Taylor Historic Park. Shockingly it's the southernmost state park in the continental US. How surprising?!?! We actually just wanted to go to the beach that's behind the park, but we figured we would stop in at the fort anyways.
Here is Summy trying to figure out if the cannon is real. I'm not sure if she ever figured it out.
The fort was ok, i was more intrigued by the GIANT Iguanas hanging off the side of the fort and the crazy Canadian trying to see them.

Alas, we headed back to Fort Lauderdale after a great couple days in Key West. Before heading home we went on an airboat tour to try and see some alligators in the wild. LOOK OUT! This guy had his eye on Gary/

Love Love Love National Geographic Blogs!! It shows we are a generation of Marlin Perkins's! Great Job Everett's! Thanks for sharing your wonderful vacation!
Looks like you enjoyed Key West, and are planning a return trip??
And for keeping the blog count up!
Thanks for sharing the sun, we need it!

What a great blog about one of the best places, and wonderful on such a lousy weather day here. Didn't see any pix of Duval st.? Maybe you didn't go there--right! Tropical themes on the last 2 blogs. What a great trend to keep going. Who's next? Any city that requires you to walk around with an open alcholic container has the right idea. These last 2 blogs have been great! I am guessing that there may be a response from the Holtz-Twombley clan on this one. Stay warm.

I do believe this is our first blog where we had a participant look into a "live" cannon! The things we do for the blog! Great job! I for one, love pictures of food.

unkie said...

Nc jnn is right! Every blog seems to come up with one thing that is brand new, and I think that there were at least 3 firsts: southern most point, matching motor scooters, and the face in the cannon. I think that the challenge is there for nc jnn. You need to plan a trip to create some more "firsts". It's wed. I'm home. Life is good.

So one week from today is Thanksgiving! Hope everyone has a place to go, someone to break bread with, and pie! If not, 431 will be open, with all the obligatory trimmings! So please stop by!
Open house for Austin tonight, I am hoping it will last the 4 quarters of the Bills game!
A Happy Birthday shout out to Rick Scott!!! Maybe he will read the blog today???
Enjoy the day and all that it brings!

Betsy said...

Busy Busy Saturday! Thanksgiving prep begins, the grand opening of Cousin Andrea's Restaurant, in which Anastasia's insists on attending, and a reservation with my sister for breakfast! Enjoy the day and all that it brings!
And hey its the weekend! 48 hours of me time!

unk said...

Sounds like somebody is going to have a fun weekend. I know that Mom has been angling for an invitation to attend the grand opening all week. Pretty day out there but cold. Enjoy!

Now that the bills aren't playing today I will spend my day getting ready for new windows to be installed on Tuesday, fasting for my favorite holiday, and perhaps doing some early Christmas shopping.
We had a great time at the Woodcock brothers brewery last night.
Rumor has it Aunt Sue's pirate gift was "won" at a charity event. Aunt Sue said this is the "prize of all prizes." $10 to the person who can tell me what it is. For clarification purposes is re-gifting allowed? I didn't see that in our rule book.

It kind of does not feel like a Monday as I am not lamenting another bills loss! Very busy weekend! Had brkfst with my sister on Saturday and then did some shopping on Elmwood, as she was in the hunt for rootbeer elixer? For some cookie recipe?
Which we never found BTW
Took Gramma to the Woodcock Brothers Brewery Co Grand opening on Saturday afternoon, and that was a lot of fun! I highly recommend the Restaurant/Brewery, great beer, great food! So we are driving to the restaurant on Saturday, and I say to my mother, do you have any money?? And she says yes of course I have 80$. So we get there just as Barb and Chuck arrive, and she promptly says to me, now you go buy the first round, and she goes to give me her wallet, which she "allegedly" forgot to bring! Just so you are all aware that did not exonerate me from buying the first round! All in all we had a lot of fun, in an amazing restaurant!
here's hoping all have a wonderful day, good luck getting through the next 8 hours!

Turkey day minus 2 and my last work day until the 27th. I feel like I am imitating nphw jff. Looks like travel conditions tomorrow will be good but I don't know anyone who will be travelling. Hope everyone has a shopping game plan for friday. Looks as if I have to start thinking about a pirate gift. All I have to do is find some root beer elixir and at least I will have one interested bidder. Enjoy the day.

I usually take thanksgiving week off, but for some reason I did not this year, so each waking hour at work I am compiling to do lists.
the windows go in this morning, so that can be checked off
I have to invite my brother, not you UC the other one
I have to grocery shop
I have to get beer, wine, and hard liquor, just in case
I thnk thats it
Spoke to my sister yesterday, they arrived in Asheville, safe and sound!
Here is hoping we all find something to be thankful for!

Visiting PA for Thanksgiving this year. Have a fantastic day everyone! Nice blog Jll...those crazy Canadians...

Awesome blog! FUN! A must see!
Looks like you guys had fun... Sandra and I have been looking matching motor scooters for years now. I loved the picture of that crazy Canadian putting her head in the cannon. Crazy Canadians.
They crack me up.

Happy Thanksgiving eve! I hope everyone gets where they need to be safe and sound!

Tonight is the official first tapping of the Everett Family Kegerator at Steinbrenner's. Slim pickings at Consumers last night so we have a 1/4 keg of Yuengling for a party of 10 tonight. I'd say thats plenty.

Hope that everyone has a great day today. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Happy Thanksgiving from Butler, PA. I hope everyone enjoyed their day.

unk said...

Even tho no one is out there to read this, with everyone out getting Black Friday bargains, I figured that I would wish everyone a "hope you don't have to work and have a fun, doing something that you really want to do" day. Had a good day yesterday except for the fact that I had 3 hffb players score 80 pts.and am just barely ahead of nphw jff. After getting thumped last week by nc jll who chose to not even use 2 players against me, this is getting to be just another "woe is me" occasion. Time to go and help Auntie finish the clean up from yesterday. Enjoy

JT said...

Unckie you'll find a way to win... You always do against me. Sandra did brave the crowds here in Butler, PA and got a couple deals. Now she's napping.
I on the other hand stayed here manning the TV and coffee maker. Thank goodness Sandra has the strength to get things done. Enjoy Friday everyone.

JNNA said...

Happy Thanksgiving! Austin and I ventured out on Black Friday. Let's just say we have the PERFECT pirate gift! It is FRAG-ILE

unkie said...

So, just in case I didn't see what I thought I saw, there is time for corrections. I thought that I saw Buffalo force Indy to punt and got the ball on their own 8 yard line with 50 seconds until the half and them getting the second half kickoff and decide, not having scored a td in 6 quarters that they would move the length of the field with one time out. Two incompletions later its time to punt and we all saw what happened. I am going to have a stroke and it's all my own fault. I'm going out to shovel.

If only we could go back in time to Unkie's bold prediction. 13 years without a playoff run!

I hope everyone had a glorious holiday, but now its back to work!
Anastasia enjoyed her meal(s)!
UGH to the snow
sorry the koch's were mia on the blog for a few days, seems we had some router issues??
The Bills, are just to frustrating to watch and or listen too! And hockey, season is probably a wash???
I personally watched the Grey Cup!
Enjoy Monday, and get through it as best you can!

Spending way too much time going back and rereading the blogs and posts from the first few months of the family blog. Adam lamenting the fact that at age 29 he felt like Abe Simpson, the night that GG "ate floormat" in nphw jff's van, everyone studying for final exams. Ah yes. Good times. Much less activity now, but amazing that it is still alive and kicking. Caroline called this AM to see if it was snowing and made nana promise that we would have snow for her next week. Nana of course promised to find some, somewhere, so we may be making an extended road trip. Enjoy the day and may powerball be yours or mine tonight. That would make for an exceptional holiday wouldn't it? Odds are 1 in 168 million. Why not?

Anonymous said...

I am so happy that our blog is still kicking! After I win the powerball tonight I will hire a blog writer who's jb description will be to follow each of us and compose a humorous and entertaining blog. I purchased some powerball tickets. I will still be about 300 million shy to buy the bills, but mr Wilson and I will be talking. Enjoying the next few days off. Promised gram I would take her shopping.jenna

unk said...

Anyone travel to arizona or missouri to buy powerball tickets? I didn't think so. Poverty, only in the financial sense, remains the family norm. Oh well. I've seen too many of those shows where people were ruined by winning the lottery so it is probably better to not take a chance. The good news is that I got an email from Buffalo tournament club that their golf course will be open sat. thru monday. Gonna save a drive to Pa. for the December round. Mom is looking forward to her shopping day with nc. jnn. Enjoy

Betsy said...

Was in many power ball pools and the most that was won was 8$. But I did have most of my portion spent, and rest assured you all would have gotten a little somthing! I agree our initial blogs were hysterical, Patti's Flocking blog is a classic! Re read even funnier. It is still one of the better Holtz idean's, not as good as the deli mind you but right up there! Suppose to be a beautiful weekend! So enjoy the sun and better weather, as we know it will not last!
Had a conversation with my sister, and I offered to host Christmas, so please note the date and location.
My sister had suggested that we get a cleaning lady for Mom, just a few hours a week, and we all split it for the year. OK I proposed that to her, man oh man, did that go over like a lead balloon! She can clean her own apartment thank you very much! After a little coaxing and proding she agreed to contact Tammy, pay her, herself and schedule her, when she feels she needs her!
Mom's determination, will power and sense of indepence will see her into her 100 years, I am convinced of that!
Sorry I did not win the millions for us, but I have always felt like a millionaire because of all of you!!!

Patti said...

Speaking of Christmas...Chuck and I would love to have it here this year if everyone is up for a drive to East Aurora on Christmas morning. Let us know your thoughts!

Patti said...

PS I still do love flocking. If only Unkie would get involved, it would be the perfect hobby to do together!

JNNA said...

Good Morning! Happy December 1st. I wonder if I could do a pirate gift centered around flocking? I decided since it was December 1st I better start shopping. But, I noticed all the places doing free shipping and then said! BINGO! Enjoy the 50 degree weather!

Betsy said...

Happy Monday! I hope everyone enjoyed the shellacking the bills gave Jacksonville!! Shame that game was not viewable! We did listen to it on the radio, however.
Thank you AP and UC for offering your home for Christmas! I for one would love to come! I did broach the subject with my family and my mother, that as our family grows and continue's to change, our Holtz Family Christmas could be held another day, not on Christmas day. Please note that, that went over like a lead balloon!
Maybe for Christmas 2013, if we are all so blessed as to be able to celebrate, maybe another day would be better?
Let me know what I can bring.
Gift Ideas for Gramma: Pajama's! And of course her Tops Cards!
I actually think she is ahead of the 8 ball on the banana count today!
Enjoy today....

JT said...

Auntie P, thank you for the invite. We'd love to come. What can we bring? Sandra makes delicious glazed flockers, can we bring some? Would Unckie be embarrased?

JT said...

I'm watching Megastorm Hurricane Sandy on the History Chanell. It's like watching it live.

Sndra said...

Auntie P...which Holtzs are coming to NY this year?

So I actually did not even wear a coat to work today, how crazy is that! So one of the best parts of the Holidays is we all communicate, I notice my nephew even responded to the blog! I know I know since his firewall at work blocks him, but it is great to see a JT and his lovely wife too! So I am guessing its settled, The Holtz Family Christmas Extravaganza will be hosted by my big brother and his lovely wife! All I ask for is Nog!
OBTW, that is 3 weeks from today, people, 3 Weeks!
I am a little leary of 2013 I have to say... Its that 13!
Have a great tuesday!

unkie said...

Yup. Talked to Mrs Fixxitt today and they are all set so Houston, we have a go. Hoping for a good weather travel day in 3 weeks. It will be here before we know it. Love these warm temps. Enjoy. The Onion says that the Yankee fans are already upset that they won't have Arod to boo until May. True? And of course Mike Napoli is the answer to all the Redsocks questions. Less than 4 months until opening day. Can't wait

JT said...

4 months to opening day and I already have 4 games planned, no tix, but soon enough.
I loved the day today. At lunch I went to Subway, got a steak n cheese then took off to the park to eat it. Man what a day.

Unckie...is Jefferson able to come this year?

Antie P said...

So Sorry! I got so distracted with my holiday flocking I forgot to tell you all how happy I am that you are coming to 1070 for Christmas. As soon as I finish flocking, I will work on my menu-probably next week- and let you know what to bring to the feast. In answer to Sandra's question, none of our kids or grandkids will be home for the 25th. Jeff, glazed flockers would be delicious. Unkie will just have to live with it.
Well, it's back to flocking for me. Tootles!

It's like Flockapalooza.

Happy Thursday, or in the Kaleida world it is known as pay day! whoo hoo.. I am sure you all remember, my dear neighbor from Ilion St, Bob Mileham, well he passed away last week, so say a little prayer that he goes through the pearly gates, no questions asked! He was a great guy! Man could he pick the horses!
Had a wonderful visit with my Adm! Most appreciative of all your help!
AP - keep it simple 12/25!
Just very much looking forward to our Christmas Extravaganza! Who will be playing baby Jesus this year in our pagent??? Just curious.
who else is frustrated with the lack of move forwardness of the hockey brain trust, show of hands?
How about Congress going home, with the fiscal cliff looming!
Hope everyone caught "Duck Dynasty" Christmas special, it was a moving tribute to the redneck!
Other than that, I have work to do!

Checked my cell phone before leaving for work and found that I had 2 new text messages. Curious, since I don't text, I opened them to find that the mount was scheduled to be closed on tuesday. Puzzled, I groped around, punching various buttons at 6 AM to find out more, to eventually discover that it was closed on Oct. 30. Where had that message been for the last 37 days? Atleast when mail was lost before, we could always blame Uncle Larry. Who now? Anyhow, that's how my day started. The rest is bound to be better. Enjoy.

JT said...

Do we know sent the text? I think there's a lot of questions we need answers to. Why did it just show up? What are you doing up at 6AM? Did Auntie plant the text?
Are we going to get a flocking text alert for Christmas?

JNNA said...

I have to admit I am quite perturbed (I wonder if that word was used on the blog yet). I posted this rant about Unkie's text message and went to publish and it disappeared.
I will abbreviate my previous non existant post and move forward:
There seems to be a whole in Unkie's story. He mentions he received 2 text messages, but we only heard about the 1. Was the other 1 perhaps cancelling the inadvertant previous text? I will text Unkie today and get to the bottom of it. I should have this wrapped up by March.
On another note: Bob Mileham was a wonderful man. He will always be remembered. While my sister and I were sharing our fondest memories of him and his dear late wife, Nancy; I recalled the time when we would go to his house for Halloween and receive rolled pennies and candy. My sister fondly remembers each time the Genny Cream Ale truck would pull up to deliver his kegs.
Took today off work. Actually took every Friday off of work in December. My friend's son (James, 3 yr) and I are taking a train ride to the "North Pole" AKA (Arcade/Attica Railroad) to visit the man in the red suit. Hoping that all of us are on the nice list this close to Christmas. If not, there is always time for improvement.
Enjoy your day!

JNNA said...

Correction: (hole) not whole. Sister Patricia would be rolling in her grave right now! Shame on me!

unk said...

both text messages were the same. It's my day off and we are heading into tonawanda to take gg to bfst.no other flocking alerts that I know of but I will continue to check with auntie. Enjoy the day, particularly the train ride. Sounds like a holiday themed blog to me.

My streak has been broken. 30 years of driving and I got hit today. Get this, it was in my work parking lot. All that I am doing is waiting my turn to enter the continuous traffic known as North Forest when bang! She was backing out of her parking spot and backed right in to me. I was fuming.
Time to start a new streak.

Betsy said...

so sorry nephew! How did she not see you? Maybe you can get a new car out of the deal?

JT said...

I'd just like my door replaced.
I have no idea how she didn't see me... I was right in her rear view mirror.

Jenna said...

Sorry that happened to you Jff. Luckily no one was injured, but rest assured its a pain in the butt. I would guess she was on her cell phone, not focused on driving, had her mind on other things, eating a cheeseburger from mcds, etc.
So a freshman wins the heisman?
Looking forward to a day with GG tomorrow.
Wondering if unkie can give me an abbreviated version of what this fiscal cliff means for me.
Have a good day everyone!

JT said...

And if he could use a laser pen that would be great. I love laser pens.

I was kinda hoping my ic rink would be easier to do.

unk said...

So sorry to hear about nphw jffs little complication. Nphw Eric stoiber was sitting in line for service at Paddock chev. a few weeks back when the person in front of him decided to leave the line by backing directly into his car's front end. Seems like there is a lot of not paying attention going on. House is a lot emptier and quieter after everyone has gone back home. Remember when we used to talk about Bills losses? Be careful out there. We will speak to the fiscal cliff at a later time.

Tim Geitner states: said...

In the United States, the fiscal cliff is a term used to refer to the economic effects that could result in tax increases, spending cuts and a corresponding reduction in the US budget deficit beginning in 2013 if existing laws are not changed by the end of 2012. The deficit—the difference between what the government takes in and what it spends—is expected to be reduced by roughly half beginning in the first days of 2013. This sharp decrease in the deficit in such a short period of time is known as the fiscal cliff. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the sudden reduction will probably lead to a recession in early 2013 with the pace of economic activity picking up by late 2013.

I have to admit I am still in a funk over the bils debacle on Sunday! Should Chan be fired? And we start all over? Or do we cont to go the route we are? And did you hear the halftime entertainment in Toronto is a singer that sings anti american songs???? Should I already resign myself to not watch the game, maybe I will put up the Christmas tree instead.
Enjoy Tuesday!

so I am going to reach out to my family for this one! As I desperately need your love and support! And you can always count on your family, right? Thick or thin, good times bad times, rising flood waters, etc etc.
I have made a decision, and I did not take it lightly, mind you, I put a lot of thought into it!
Here goes, I am not watching the Bills game on Sunday, there I said it! We will decorate the Christmas Tree, play Christmas music really loud, sing and have fun! It will be no Bills Zone on Sunday!
PEACE!

unkie said...

AB, you made a good decision. Has it been 20 years since I saw my nphw on the floor being surfed on? Achy brakey heart was the big song of the evening. Walking thru the hotel to our room singing Mel Torme songs. It was a great occasion and certainly all of our best wishes to many, many more happy years. Won't even bring "yuke" up since it is still football season. Maybe I won't watch "is that you Willis" either. I am sure that there are better things to do.

The elves at 1070 are working on the game plan for the 25th and our wish list will soon be out. Did make a substantial stop at the liquor store and the nog is due to be made shortly. Bloodshed? Pirate gift bloodshed? Yikes.
Thanks for the Anniversary well-wishes that was a fun night.

I don't think we're going to watch the Bills game either. It just gets to be too much for me yelling at a TV.
