Gettysburg 2012
By JT Pilaf
Sandra suggested I pull over as others had decided to do, but I was so excited about getting to our destination that I just couldn't allow myself to stop.
We arrived at Gifford Pinchot SP in Lewisberry, PA to the hot sun and friendly flutterbies.
It was a beautiful day on Monday so we ate a hearty breakfast and headed to Gettysburg.
We immediately got tickets to the movie, cyclorama and museum. Zach loves taking his time absorbing everything.
After spending some time at the visitor center we grabbed some lunch at the Lincoln Diner where Zach ordered us a "Booth" to sit down in. He's been waiting for over a year to do that. We then set out to look for Grampa's brick.
Found it! Yahoo! On the west side of the David Wills House, the third slant in, all the way to the bottom about ten feet from the building.
After searching for 2 hours and asking everyone in town, we thought it time for an ice cream. What better place to go than the Cannonball Malt Shop where a the old school house building took a hit on day 1. The teachers then sent the kids home. Unckie, is that protocal when under attack?
Gettysburg is incredible. We really appreciated the park.
Here's Emma at one of many NY monuments.
Here's the very first memorial dedicated to Strong Vincent a year after his death in 1864 by his men.
The kids enjoyed exploring.
Here's a sharpshooter's wall in Devil's Den looking at Little Round Top. A famous photograph was taken of a dead soldier in front of this wall after the troops hhad left. The soldier was placed here on the ground for dramatic efffect... like that was needed after the three day battle.
Sandra tried to sneak up on me in Devil's Den... actually she was freaked out by the fact that the confederates were fighting gunfire from the north and rattlesnakes at the same time.
We really enjoyed the two days we spent exploring Gettysburg and really appreciated what the battle meant. It makes you humble.
I think a lil' bit more can be made out of this.
In November of 1863, President Lincoln would make a two minute address to the 20,000-30,000 in attendence after following keynote speaker Edward Everett who had just finished his two hour speach. After there was little response when he finished he thought his speech was a failure.
The bodies are buried by state. Some unknowns ended up in different states or on the wrong fighting side.
I wonder what the soldiers were thinking when they saw this in the evening...

I love Gettysburg -- awesome blog Jff -- well done!
I have lots of good memories of summer trips there. That was a great way to start my morning.
That was an awesome job done by the Rice Family! Great information passed on, and it should encourage everyone to go and see Gettysburg first hand! I concur K, great way to start the day, or it now is more towards lunch!
Glad you arrived safely to your destination, that rain looked like it could have been a little scary!
What is next on the Pilaf adventure calendar? Did you all get your Gettysburg stamps?
and Gramma wants to know if Grampa's brick is by Lincoln? She did not say which Lincoln, or what Lincoln, so I should probably just tell her yes???
Yes, Grampa's brick is by Lincoln. I was told by a hot dog vendor that it's the best likeness around, he stands 6'4 and smells of loganberry.
Thank you, for the kind words. Next up for the Travelin Pilafs is Stony Brook SP in two weeks.
Great pix. Excellent detective work in finding "the brick". Was there b-ball in the trip too? Off to Hotlanta in a few hours to celebrate the big first birthday. Enjoy the weekend all.
Happy rainy, I am glad I am not off Friday!
Happy belated first birthday to the Girls! Hope it was a grand celebration, complete with cake and ice cream!
Happy Belated Birthday wishes, to David, hope you were able to take advantage of discount golf days at the links!
Happy 2nd Anniversary to the not so newly weds!
Lets see did I miss anyone?
Work has been extremely busy, so I kind of have been remiss in my blog duties, I will try to do better. So Jnna gets a call from GG that she needs to see her ASAP!
It appears her cassette player died, and she was in the middle of the "best book she has ever heard" and it died, if she does not get it replaced, she will literally die!
Now how do you ignore a VM like that??
So of course, daughter dropped what she was doing to run and get her a new recorder! Raise your hand if you think gramma is spoiled, mmm just as I thought!
Enjoy the very last day of the work week if you work M-F!
Good morning all, Unckie's down in Hotlanta. Have fun.
It looks like its going to be a nice day, so I think Zach and I will check out the boat race on the river.
Emma had her very last Kids Play soccer game last night.
We have a pretty relaxing weekend and next week before the craziness starts with camping, parties, and WingFest over Labor Day weekend.
Enjoy your day
Monday Monday, 2 words!
Hope the trip to Hotlanta went off without a hitch!
Kind of a slow going weekend, not to much accomplished, but not to much on the to do list either, so I quess it was successful! Had GG over for dinner yesterday, made her some chicken stew, with enough left over for today. Bronx, Jll and Gry came over with a recap of their vacation, sounds like they had fun.
Other than that nothing really happening, other than the usual mundane day to day, run of the mill, rat race, status quo, same ole same ole, stuff!
Have a great day, smile!
Back from an all too short trip to Atlanta. Lots of fun celebrating the "Big No. 1" with the little ladies and especially watching them enjoy their special birthday cupcake. Summer is rapidly coming to a close but it seems like everyone found at least a few enjoyable things to do and there is still some time remaining. Ditto on all of the happy belateds to all. I did hear the tragic story of the dying cassette and nc jnn, you are a saint to get her back on line. Apparently the talking blood pressure cup is no more, and it seemed to be doing more harm than good so that may be a positive thing. Hope that everyone has a good week. Tomorrow is the last Bison day game for the season, hard to believe, so I may have to check that out.
GREAT BLOG! I read it before, just failed to comment. Sorry! So Gram had a "problem" the other night. It seems as though her CD player "broke." After working 12 hours and her frantic calls I decided to run to Family Dollar and get her a new one. She was in her glory after she could actually see the buttons.
Unfortunately, as of last night the CD player is not functioning. Aunt Sue tried "fixing" it, but I am not sure what the problem is. It was working for 2 days. So if anyone has a chance to look at it I would greatly appreciate it.
Didn't see the Bills game last week but did see the top 10 plays of the weekend and 3 were made by the vikings. I guess that the game didn't go too well. At least celery came in 2nd today at the Bisons game as I roasted along the 3rd base line.
Celery won? He's a cheat!
Yesterday I had to take a 2hour fire safety course and then take a test... There's 2 hours I'll never get back.
One last camping trip for the summer, we're off to Stony Brook this weekend.
Zach has JV soccer tryouts all week this week.
2 hours wasted on fire safety, those bastards! Like highschool geometry, when will you ever need that info again! So we had an estimate on replacing some windows, at 431, and we had to pay an extra 40$ per window due to the lead paint, so I just want to warn everyone Do not eat paint chips at my house, til geo and I get that taken care of! Safety First!
JV tryouts, good luck Zach!
Got great pix of the girls eating there first Birthday cup cakes!
Enjoy wed, or as what I like to call hey at least its not monday!
Point of clarification: celery did not win but because chicken wing fell down, he/she??, celery, came in 2nd. Apparently celery has not won this year, but then again, the Bisons haven't all that often either. Fire safety? I am still part of fire drills which involve a whole lot more walking up and down stairs than I would care to take part in. Enjoy camping, soccer, paint chip collecting, whatever it is that helps occupy these fleeing days of summer. I think that I will go and mow.
Does anyone else see a problem with celery never winning??? Hey kids celery is for losers, wings and blue cheese is where its at! Gary and I are going to the Bisons game on Friday, I plan on making a sign in support of celery!
You go girl!! I think that this must be something peculiar to WNY. Maybe, after the wings and blue cheese, the celery is considered an afterthought. At the Wilmington,Delaware games celery holds a lofty position. Jill and Good Gary catching the last bash of the season. Enjoy!
I kind of hate to disagree with my daughter, but I do thnk that wings and blue cheese is where its at!
Everytime I scroll through this blog, I enjoy it everytime, such great pictures, and such a nice diversion from work!
Go celery!!! I feel sorry for him... Her?
Have fun at the game on Friday.
Emma had 3 hard boiled eggs for dinner tonight. We had steak. What kind of parents are we?
Aww, I am quessing ms Emma wanted 3 hard boiled eggs for dinner!
We had hot dogs! What kind of people are we!!
So excited for the weekend! Can not come soon enough!
Enjoy thursday, It looks like it is going to be a beautiful day!
OMG, is it really friday?? I have waited for it all week! Meeting Cookie and Good Gary at the Bisons game tonight. Watching James and Audrey tomorrow AM, during the bikeathon for the family who's house blew up, we booked our flight to Hotlanta for the big birthday bash weekend! So our leaving flight choices were a 6AM flight or a 5PM flight? Seriously nothing in between?? So daughter and I vacilated as to which to choose, and then after much debate we decided on the 6AM flight that way we can go out for breakfast and lunch!
Heres hoping its a quick day!
Oh and I lost my favorite coffee cup! UGH
Went in to have lunch with Mom today and she said that AB was part of the 30 mile charity bike run today. I am curious as to how my sister fared over 30 miles in
90+ heat? Checked out the CD player and my highly trained technological self decided that it was broken. Go Bills!
AB was an integral part in the 30 mile bike trek. She graciously volunteered to babysit Katie's 2 kids so Katie was able to participate. What a very somber bike ride. But very proud of everyone who biked. Temps started at low 70's with slight breeze. We crossed into Wilson at 91 with no breeze. Needless to say I am exhausted. Our goal was 3 hours and we completed just under 2 1/2 hours! Jenna
Lots of hard work for a very worthy cause. Rest up today nc jnn, you earned it. 2nd last weekend of the summer. hope that everyone has something fun to do.
Happy Happy Birthday to nephew Jff!
I always really struggle to find the perfect birthday gift for nephew, but not this year! You see tonight in theaters across america, 2016, Barack Obama's America opens! Movie passes on the way! Sounds like date night at the Rice house!
Enjoy Monday!
Happy birthday! A special thank you to my sister for also joining me in the bike ride. She did awesome! I couldn't have done it without them. UGH to Monday! Hope everyone is safe from Isaac. Jenna
And a belated HB to nphw jff. Hope that your day was a good one and you found a little time for yourself. Big question is, do I go for Tavares Jackson in HFFF? Another question. When was the last time that the Bills had someone who really made a splash during preseason football (in a positive way)? Seems like every year around the league there are all of these players from nowhere making big plays. Here in WNY, not so much. The best news is that I didn't go to the Aldean concert at Darien Lake on Sat. Enjoy the day
Happy friday eve! So has everyone been enjoying the RNC! I know me too! Very excited for nephew Rick and his lovely wife's visit! hear it is suppose to rain on Monday, not sure why I would be surprised to hear that! Sad to see the Bisons season come to an end, wonder who will be the new parent co??? Any predictions on the bils tonight?? Enjoy the day and all that it brings, see everyone this weekend! and that is what gets you through the day!
the 31st of august! Where did the summer go??? no seriously, where did it go? so austin has returned home for school, and the lingering aroma of McDonalds has almost left the house! Will miss him terribly, as his calm demeanor is such a welcome presence in our chaos!
So much going on! Ralph Wilson is ill, and that has everyone worrying that the bills will leave.
kind of an entertaining game, thoughts?
Terry Pegula has the rights to develop Webster St around the arena, now that is what I am talking about! That is exciting news. Has not rained all summer, my sister plans a picnic, and quess what, that is correct, rain in the forcast! some things you can just bank on. When I was walking into work, I noticed that it was such a beautiful day, almost turned around and went home!
But no, must work!!! UGH
Enjoy this very last day of August!
cus you know what tomorrow brings, yes that is correct, SEPTEMBER!
Seems like Baptismpalooza was yesterday and the summer lay before us and now it is Wingfest time again. Tuesday it is back to classes for another year. Great to look back and know that my time in school started during the Truman presidency and I am still there. I want to know what UG bailed on the chowder? So little in life to truly enjoy and it is always so much more enjoyable when someone else is doing all of the work. Hope that the weather does cooperate on monday. It would be ironic given the summer that we have had. Enjoy the weekend. See you all on monday.
Happy Labor Day!
What a busy weekend. We had a party for Sandra's mom on Friday night, WingFest and a boat ride on Saturday and Zach had his first soccer game yesterday after church.
And today, Rick and Stacy's visit, at my mom and dad's. Busy.
Thank goodness I took off tomorrow too.
Great time yesterday. Now, unlike some others-pencil in nphw jff=it is off to work. Enjoy the day. Real comfortable nite last nite sleeping for those without central air. Yes, that was sarcasm.
Was a little concerned driving in, as I saw some off and on showers. wil that impede the golf game this AM! Had a wonderful wonderful picnic at my sisters yesterday! The food, the conversation, just a great end to a great summer! And of course visiting with Rick and lovely wife, just an added bonus!
Enjoy the day people, as we all now settle into our "routines"
Hope to see everyone tonight at Dr Duff's! Except jff of course, as he is singing somewhere???
The first official back to school day and the Niagara section of the thruway lived up to its reputation of being the worst place to drive between 7AM and 7:15
Had lots of fun at Duff's last nite, of course how could you not, beer and wings, and beer!
We had the best little waitress, her name was Tina, and she did the best job! And as we were leaving my sister calls out rather loudly, Great Job Anita!!! I hope they tipped her well!
Its Wed, but it feels like Tuesday?
Sorry we missed last nite but I was BEAT!! Not yet in midseason form. Ironic that the biggest rainstorm since April coincided with the golf outing yesterday. Hope that they finished dry. One more day of school this week and then tomorrow afternoon we leave for Quincy.
so I get into work super early to prepare for a heavy duty 7:30AM meeting, come into work, check my email, and this meeting was cancelled at 8PM last night and the message was sent from the organizers IPhone! Is that legal?
And I have to be here late! UGH
Oh well its thursday, and my brother and his lovely wife are traveling today, drive safe, as it is not safe out there! Lets see whats news, the YANKEE's finally won a game, Dallas finally beat the Giants, And tomorrow the work week will finally be over!
Enjoy Friday eve!
back in Wny after an all too short weekend with the quincy holtzes. weather was great for the outdoor hotel pool and Oliver is a little fish. Plus, since we were driving we missed seeing the Bills game. I have slightly revised my prediction concerning the Bills season that was made on Monday. I think that I was a bit too optimistic at 12-4. I think that 3-13 is more like it. Back to work tomorrow.
I have always felt my brother leads a charmed life, anyone who was on the road out of WGR range and not forced to either watch or listen to that game, was lucky!!!
My mother's comment was even more priceless, when asked by good gary if she could see the TV OK, as we went to Steinbrenner's to watch the game, she replied, no and I am grateful I cant see them!
What a disheartening game, and how painfully long will this season be?
And its Monday! Hope it passes quickly for everyone!
I am so glad to hear that Unkie has revised his prediction. I was going to log in tonight and ask for a recap of his thoughts. Like most Bills fans, I was happy to see that game over.
I logged into my fantasy football team this evening and was advised that my Buffalo Defense has been dropped by 18,037 other fantasy leagues. Should I be the 18,038th?
Happy Tuesday. As we are still digesting the horrible game from Sunday. Just a note to all, UG stated all along that the bills would be 3-13. So now UC and UG think alike! condolences to my sister and sister in law.
We have forwarded Hotlanta Itinerary to our Host's. I think they are scared that we arrive at 8AM, but you never know how long you will be at the Waffle House.
At work early as a regulatory agency is conducting a survey. Heres hoping the day flies by, so I can do what I want to do,which is not work!
Made it to Wed, it has been touch and go, I have to admit.
The bills shelacking still stings. I did check the Thesauraus on line to see if there was a better word than shelacking, and drubbing was listed, but I am sticking with shellacking!
Just keep plugging, family- we will get there!
Did I ever mention how much I like having Wednesdays off? I probably did, but with my advanced years, this is probably life saving for me. Something else different, i hve to go cut the lawn. bad as that is, I am looking at the alternative with the driveway a few months down the road. Make the best of today.
At least its Thursday, other than that not to much is going on. This weather has been just gorgeous! Jealous I am not enjoying the last days of the summer! Did anyone else ever notice that Unky's job jar, is always full and always involves cutting the grass? Just wondering
Enjoy the day and all that it brings!
I can't help that I took after my father and became a workaholic. Actually I cut two-thirds of the lawn yesterday and since Auntie was out working and not home to keep my nose to the grindstone, I went out and drank beer. Does that make anyone think less of me?
I do think a little less of you as you only did 2/3'rds as that is kind of a hard fraction do explain, if you do 2/3rds, why not finish. Now doing half, that is so easy to explain not finishing, I could only get half done, I could only finish half, I do it all the time, works for me!! Next time complete half of the task, then go out for beer! I am not remembering my dad being a work aholic??? Must have been before me!
Niagara Hose Chowder tomorrow!!!
Hip Hip Hooray for that!
God Bless Friday!
Our daddy was never the poster child for extra effort. By way of explanation, my yard is front, side and back, hence the thirds. front and side show the most. back is left for today. 51 hours until kickoff. Let the excitement build!!
Thank you for the Math clarification! Understood
Back on the Pedestal!
Holy cow, it's been awhile. Emma and I had fun up in TO today at th Blue Jays game despite it taking 2 hours just to leave the city.
Ok, I'm back... Again. I'm a lil' apprehensive about a Bills victory today. Oh, I'll watch, I'm just saying I might be mowing my grass earlier than I want to.
Was this one of unkie's win predictions? It's
A good day when the bills win, jets and patriots lose, and the Yankees win. I was up 15 points in HFF but looks like my BIL might pull off a comeback win as his QB is set to play tonight. Not feeling the work thing today, wish I had a good excuse to use.- Jenna
Yes, I see the Bills at 12-4, bare minimum. According to Mike and Mike this morning, the last running back to AVERAGE more than 10 yds. per carry over first 2 games of the season before CJ was Jim Brown and we all know what kind of seasons they had, so you can just mark it in the books. I see us as playing now for home field advantage thru the playoffs don't you? The road to superbowl CMXIVLL or whatever will go thru BUFFALO! I love being off every other Monday, altho Auntie was not real happy leaving for her clinic this morning at 4:45 AM with me still snoozing. Enjoy
Happy Tuesday, with a gray and rainy sky!! I agree with all of the above! that was always my pat ans in high school, all of the above!
It is so much fun to listen to the sports announcers when the Jets lose! so much for their superbowl run! I believe Unky felt that the bills could be Az?? and are'nt they 2-0? enjoy the day all, and all that it brings!
Felt bad bailing out on seeing Mom this morning but I am up to my eyeballs in work. I did promise dinner for next thursday. Unfortunately sister sue is stuck with picking up some most necessary ointment from the pharmacy. Sorry sis, but Mom provided a whole lot more information than I really wanted. still waiting for my roofing people which is not a surprise after all of the dry weather that we have had.
That is weird, I thought I posted a comment. Quess I did'nt? Feel bad my bro had to suffer through a conversation re ointment and my mother, those never end well! So Zach and Austin are battling it out for Holtz Fantasy Family BaseBall supremecy! Good Luck fellas!!! Always sad to see BB wind down, always a preminition to wild weather coming! So my sister and I are scheduled for a road trip this Saturday, I know I know me too!! So we are heading off to the Sonnenberg Gardens in Canandaiqua. Hoping for a sunny day! Not taking Anastasia so dont tell her! Other than that, not to much else going on, I think we have our window issue solved, we are going with the cheapest, make sense?
Very excited for our birthday bash weekend in Hotlanta!
Glad the Bisons are hitching their wagons to the Blue Jays! Think we will see better ball games.
Ok have to get some work done!
OBTW, Happy Wed!
I'M TELLIN!!! Guess who?
The snitch
mmm??? Wonder who that might be?
I think I have an idea!
Enjoy the day
You are wrong. It is obviously nphw jff.
Anonymous
Jff?? That would be so unlike him!
So lets re cap, Monday, work, Tuesday, work, Wed, work, thursday, work and now its friday!
Of course I have our road trip tomorrow, so that will be fun
And then our bills game day party on sunday, so the weekend is pretty full! Well gonna finish my coffee and get busy!!!
The answer is really very simple!
Anyone with big plans for the last 3 hours of summer? I know that there are some, so I have read, that intend to use it by travelling to Canandaigua, supposedly without my mother, but other than that? Got my last mow of the summer in yesterday and eagerly anticipate fall mowing, what with all of the falling leaves. Drive to Cleveland tomorrow for the game? Guess not. Any other options that i am missing? Enjoy the weekend.
Good morning! Hoping the Bills win but more importantly hope my numbers win! REceived a frantic call from my beloved grandmother yesterday. Seems she had a hankering for a Arby's roast beef sandwich and fries. So needless to say, granddaughter Jenna delivered as mother and aunt were not within a Arby's drive thru radius. We're trying our best NOT to turn the heat on today. Prediction? 17-16 Buffalo! -Jenna
Congrats to cookie for running her second half marathon yesterday. 13 miles! I know I had trouble getting up and down the hill in Lewiston.
Austin requested off at work yesterday so he could attend his homecoming dance. Unfortunately he was put on the schedule and could not attend. He was not to happy about that. Ah the joys of working when you don't want too! Jenna
Happy Monday to one and all! Monday is so much better when the bills win and the pats lose!
No one won our Football pool at 431 yesterday, so of course the 5$ carries over to next weeks pool!
Had a nice dinner with Anastasia, sent her home with leftovers and groceries for the week, or a few days anyway. Had a very nice trip to Sonnenberg with my sister. some day will have to tell the story of how she got much more than she payed for! Another time maybe
And of course nephew and his lovely wife are on a Carribean Cruise! I know I know and the American League East still up for grabs!
Other than that it should be a quiet week, dont you think??
Cruise? Adam? He didn't mention anything. Who else could it be? Rick? Of course the roofers arrived yesterday, began the tear off just as the first of many "lake effect" rain showers (I just love that term lake effect) began. They tarped and promised to return today. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Can't wait for wed. I am pooped. The 32 billionaire NFL owners are obviously concerned about the quality of their product and the fact that people might stop watching, right? Another nice day in the northtowns. Enjoy it.
Hey at least its not Monday! Jff and his lovely wife are at sea! Hopefully having the time of their life! Is Jimmy your roofer? Because he is very dependable!
I think the replacement Ref's are doing an amazing job! Hoping that trend continues in Orchard Park this Sunday!
Enjoy the day family, here's hoping that my brother's roof goes on before the rains come!
