As the family grows and continues to change, we use our family blog to keep in touch, remind each other of who we are, where we came from, and where were going.

A Blissful Trip South
One of the very nice things about being retired is having the flexibility to be able to travel whenever you want. There are many places to go and things to see but it is important to have a plan to make sure that you make best use of your time.
I am fortunate that Auntie P. loves to travel with me. As in the case of any wife of almost 40 years, she loves to hear me tell stories of the historical events of the area we are passing through, and hangs on my every word. The conversation flows non-stop as the miles pass.
Traveling on the back roads requires vigilance because you never know what local critters might run in front of your car.
With so much driving, we stopped for gas often, always looking for good service at the best possible price. This was one stop that Auntie particularly enjoyed.
It is always a tough decision to decide where to stop and eat along the way, but I had researched some of the best values available, and we always found the company to be enjoyable.
We always found time for a little shopping. Auntie enjoys negotiating with the locals in an effort to get something unusual. The young lady here almost got the best of Auntie in trying to sell what she called “a very well trained dog that excelled at playing dead”.
The high point of our trip occurred in Lexington, Va. On the campus of Washington and Lee University, we came across Mustafa, I don’t know for certain, but since W and L’s law school is quite well noted, I suspect that his next assignment will be related in some way to what he is learning here.
All in all, it was a fun trip, one that broadened our interests and only brought us that much closer as a husband and wife. I know that she is already looking forward to our next chance to spend an extended period of time together in the car.
P.S. Not to brag but this one place we stopped enjoyed my wit and historical knowledge so much , they renamed their town after me.

sounds like a wonderful, wonderful trip, although I'm wondering why, with so much fun, you returned to gloomy EA? And Jff, you may have no red sox on your team, but individuals such as garret anderson and eddie guardado are driving up the average age to about 50...
Funny, there's no "bourbon swilling kdh-ville" in Tennessee, though I bet if I talk to the right person I can get that done!
Great blog dad - love the travelogue.
In the 80s here today -- nothing like gloomy EA! But my goodness the pollen!
Awesome blog! What a nice trip you two retirees had. It truly is a blessing when your wife can hang on your every word like it was your first date. I, unfortunately, bore my wife to sleep when we go and see my parents or her parents which are only (8 minutes away).
I'd take gloomy WNY over anywhere in the country.
It was great to see Mustafa in good health. Hopefully you didn't give him money. I understand he's off the wagon again.
Yes Adm, those two mentioned players have some dirt behind their ears. I know your not the kind of person to discriminate against age. They bbring with them experience and good fashion sense.
I must confess that we did spend an extended period in Chuckey, tenn and found all of the folks very hospitable. Someone would say "squealin' like a pig", and everyone would laugh uproariously. Adam and I were chatting on the phone yesterday just about the time that team USA scored the winning run. I won't tell you what my kind, loving, soon to be a teacher, son said at that point. That call in the 8th inning helps to even the score, just a little bit, for Pearl Harbor. Jff, you definitely need to do the golf at Clear creek. I haven't gone personally, but i know some people who have (who chose to not invite me), and I guess theyhad a great time--36 holes per day and decent food and reasonable accommodations.
March Madness?? George Washington loses 2 games all year, is ranked 8the in the country, and gets a #8 seed. Air Force, hasn't won a game outside of Colorado, goes out in the first round of their tourney, and they are in. Like to be Hofstra?--out, while George Mason, who they beat twice in the last 2 weeks, is in? I am angry already. the only good thing is that since it will be snowing the rest of the week, the wbc and 64 will give me something to do.
I too am bitter about GW. My alma mater was robbed!
Antie B -- no problem on the flask. I hope Uncle George took pujols -- he's got the best name in baseball. hee hee!
How's jnna's new job? we miss her!
just stoppin by! I love this site. I drop in occassionally when the opportunity arises, you guys are so genuinely funny. not vulgar, just funny. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the masses.
A fan in Syracuse.. GO Cuse!!!
will this site go whole hog for the tourney?
Jff~definitely did not give the squirrel $, although Unkie immediately reached into his pocket. Wait--maybe that wasn't because he was going for his wallet.
Auntie B~Not sure I can top Unkies blog, My ears are still ringing from Unkies non stop chatter but when I'm feeling better I'll see what I can come with.
To the rest of youse~KDH has promised us a Hotlanta blog since she moved, Adam has promised a blog about the joys of being a student teacher and Jenna, I'm waiting for an update on the new house(dying to know what colors you chose)and the new job.
to all non family members-where in the world are you? If you read this blog let us know you're out there-we need constant encouragement and praise!!
Albany lunch time blog fan checkin in....
Sorry that GW was snubbed, could be worse you could be opening against U Conn, which Albany is.
Enjoy the hoops madness! The only 3 weeks which go faster than is my 3 weeks of vacation!
Can Big Bill Orange keep 5 guys in double figures? Does our "hog fan" reader reside in Arkansas? Can the Albany Greyhounds at least beat the spread? I will be in front of the tv at noon thursday. Thank God dancing... is over so I won't havea fight on my hands thurs. nite.I need some insights for my "mano a mano" bets with my cronies. Who is hot and who is not?? Who does Fargo like? Jimmy? Where are you? Any strong vibes down there? Michigan hasn't reported in lately. There are those who claim that they have a shot as a 6 seed. What about indiana? Will the university reject his resignation if he wins a national title? Is it really a tourney without Bobby Knight?
Okay, family I am back!!!! My day consists of waking up at 6 am to my mother singing in the shower. Normally I would complain since I usually wake up around 10 or 11. (Ahh the good ole days). But my alarm goes off at 6:15 to start the day. I work until 2:30 as the recruitment/retention specialist for McDonald's. I don't deal with any of the burgers or fries, just the high school kids who are looking for a job with their hat on backwards. After I get out of work I head to softball practice until 5:30. Then, I usually have a meeting or two with the Tiki Hut. We are doing major renovations to the place this month. I get home around 8 or so, eat and head to bed!! Then I start it all over again.
I must admit, I have not read Gram the blog since Emma's soccer game. As far as she knows it has been down and the internet no longer exists.
As far as the house is concerned, the painting took a major hault since Cookie started travelling. But, we finished the dining room with a light yellow color. We are looking to get the hardwood floors buffed. By Christmas it will be amazing!!! This spring operation living room will be conducted. Hardwood floors and a green paint color that A.P picked out.
First mortgage payment on April 1. Only 273 more to go!!!!!
I have some reading to catch up on. I will post more later.
BY THE WAY, I just started my bracket for the NCAA. FAMILY, WHO DO YOU HAVE IN THE FINAL FOUR????
I think this family should do a bracket competition.
I'll run it.
$5 mail them to me.
So with that, no help here Unckie C.
GO 'CUSE!!!
I'm a lil' bummed the Wolverines aren't in.
I've dutifully been returning pop and beer cans to Budwey's so we'll have enough in our budget for stamps for the Holtzapalooza invitations.
GO 'CUSE!!!
and a very good morning to my family today! Up at 4:30 to catch a flight to NYC -- up and back in the same day is a little more challenging from this far south. I think I"m really going to regret this decision come around 10:15 ...
Sorry to hear thrllie is in pain -- just a quick questioin though -- didn't you graduate? How's THAT work, with the whole college team thing, huh? Did I miss something? GW isn't letting me play ball for them -- for many many reasons, starting with my inability to jump. But I digress.
Sorry Thrllie about your knee. I hope everything is ok. I can pitch if need be. Remember Dave "LaLob" LaRoche? It would be something like that. I think I could fool the first batter, I may need to be pulled after that.
Emma's home sick again today (flu bug)... She woke up and said good morning to the toilet in good ol' Holtz fashion. It was kinda like the toilet was her only friend. Ahhh... my daze in college... memories 'snif'.
So I took it upon myself to stay home with the lil' peach. The sacrafices I make for this family. I'm bloggin' all day BABEE!!!
How can Team USA lose to Canada and Korea? Nothing against those two formidable teams, but come on. Two losses by Dontrelle Willis. Thrllie DO NOT ask Dontrelle to pitch for NU.
Griffey Jr. is back!!! I hope he can stay healthy.
Man, you guys should have seen Zach play soccer last niight. He's really a good player. Runs hard, head up, makes plays... it's fun to watch.
KDH, I can't jump either... that's why I play golf. Think about it.
I can pitch if you need me, thrillie. I've been chuckin' those softball's up for Dick Cheney's huntin' practice for a while. Quack! OW!
This is going to be a very busy day for updates. I have one niece trying to get her knee down from beachball size, a great niece with the flu (one thing I don't miss about teaching is the constant exposure to every virus in the known world), a daughter flying the east coast, and a son attempting to make sense out of the Articles of Confederation for high school sophomores. The best of luck to all. Once March Madness is out of the way, we will focus our energies on Holtzapalooza. We need to get a PLAN in place. Everyone--in the words of Michael Constantine (remember him? our trivia question of the day) BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!
"Hey remember, be careful out there", that's from Hill Street Blues.
I can't wait for Thursday, I feel somethiing already in my throat and tummy. I'd hate to get anyone at work sick on Thursday.
GO 'CUSE!!!
Albany blog fan checking in..
We have already been warned by our supervisor no calling in on Thursday or Friday. But hey if you are sick you are sick right.
who is the family pulling for??
Ga mornin' Albany, personally I always root for Syracuse or Michigan in college basketball and football. Since Michigan is out after going 3-7 their final 10 games, we're hoping that 'Cuse doesn't collapse in the first round and can actually beat a beatable Tiger team in round two.
BUT, I just enjoy watching all the games. As long as Duke and Michigan State lose, I'm happy.
Jill, good luck with that knee, again. If you need anything just ask. I hear "Fever Pitch" is funny. You want us to bring over a movie or two?
After reading the comments, I now understand how Jff the "I never get sick guy" is suddenly feeling under the weather!!
KDH...the night returns from out of town do stink...but at least you get to go somewhere somewhat interesting...all I got to see last week was Wisconsin and the Detroit airport!! I did sneak out a day early though and got to surprise the kids in the morning. Thought about you and your flask on that late night return!
Ok...Ok...Mr. stay-at-home-with my- sick-kid...Mr Responsible...Mr my-kid-first...took the sick kid to PIZZA HUT for lunch!! No cookin', massive grease and a 5 yr. old sick stomach!! What I have to deal with!
Emma loves Pizza Hut and if she was still ill at the time it would have came RIGHT back out. And then I would have asked for my money back.
GO 'CUSE!!!
oh JFF -- take a lesson out of my dad's play book -- sick kids get mcdonalds cheeseburgers. The cure for every plague there is -- and something I fall back on frequently as an adult when I need something something for the "a little too much medicine last night" blues!
As the recruitment/retention specialist for McDonald's, I try not to eat those burgers and fries.
But, I slip once in awhile.
Ours is definitely not a "chicken soup" kind of family. I must admit that I never looked at Mighty Taco as the soothing kind of food that others do. I do hope that Sandra brought her hard working husband home a block of cheese to reward his inspired efforts. Someday when he writes his book on child care, we will all be able to say that we knew him when. Glad to see that all went relatively well yesterday; kdh spent only 6 hours in the air, nothing too serious for Thrillie, Quincy kids now all totally understand the importance of the Articles of Confederation, and Emma learned that nothing says love like pepperoni. Hope that today goes equally as well for all. And we all expect a response tomorrow--FROM WORK--from our Albany public servant.
My personal antidote when the "gears are reversing" is Chef Boyardee Pizza from a mix!I make it, bake and eat the whole tray. If it stays put, I'm well!
On a more serious note~ I think Unkie is trying to kill me-again.
Yesterday we went to the movies, a real treat since we usually wait for the video. Upon leaving leaving Unkie, being the gentleman he is, opened the car door for me. As I bent to get in the edge of the car door slammed into my ear right where it joins my jaw! Unkie claims the wind whipped the door from his hands but I am suspicious. There was the time he dragged me down a steep hill on my elbow, bounced me off the high end of a tetertotter and pushed me down the stairs at a party.Keep this in mind just in case something untimely and mysterious happens to me.
Albany Great Dane fan checking in! The excitement is building as this is the first time ever the danes will appear in the NCAA tournament. Tickets are all gone, and the trek to Philadelphia has begun. Go Great Danes.
Glad to see that Albany has a little March Madness close to home. We, in WNY, who have had our local teams ousted long ago can only reminisce about 1970 when Big Bob Lanier went down with his ankle and probably cost our area our one chance with an NCAA championship. What he would have done to Artis Gilmore and Pembroke Burrows were he to have played...just add that with wide right, no goal, etc. By the way, there are very logical explanations for those accidents that have plagued poor Auntie P. over the years...as I told her shortly after she stopped the slamming car door with her face, that is why we don't go out more often. 24 hours until tipoff.
Best be careful not to be too malicious toward my soon to be 60 little sister, because she will have a chance to retaliate in just a few weeks toward my soon to be 50 "baby" sister. The march of the "O"'s continues. GO EVERYBODY THAT I PICKED!!!!
So I have pacific +8 against BC. They don't have to win, all they have to do is lose by a point or two. They have to go to 2 overtimes before they eventually lose by more than 8. Holtz luck, that is a great example of it. Where is nphw jff?? He has been very quiet ever since Sndra returned home. Did she inflict such injury that he is no longer capable of typing??
I actually just realized that I haven't posted in a few daze. I guess I got so wrapped up with Monmouth winning on Tuesday that I haven't left my TV until just now. How can BC pull that one out?
Emma, thanks to Pizza Hit's special sauce recipe, is perfectly fine. She loves her daddy soooo much.
I had to pull myself away from the Marquette game. I've got a sickness, I need help. I'm actually contemplating staying home from hockey tonight to watch the games.
man, that blog was down and I was in rough shape. Glad to see you're all back!
Lookit GW go, winning in over time! Go colonials!
Otherwise, I think I'm getting fleeced, trounced, beat up in my first foray into basketball better. Holtz luck!
Happy St. Patrick's Day family!!!!!!!
Don't hear a lot of bragging out there about bracket success. In mano a mano in our family, I am looking good only because my kids are having less success than I. Great games today. N'west state over Iowa?? Gotta love the low seeds playin' outa their skulls. More good stuff tonite. Will Irish eyes be smilin' on anyone in particular?? What about my poor sister spending her last few hours in her 50's? Is there no compassion out there???
Congrats to our Albany friend for the great job the danes did for most of the game against uconn. And a very happy 60 to my little sister. Number 2 on our march to the official celebration on Aug. 5.How does Mr. Fixit feel about sharing a bed with a "sexigenarian"?
Ow. my brain hurts. Damn guinness. Oh family, I have so much to tell you all, but I need a few hours to find rational and understandable thought. So, until then, happy birthday to all those celebrating.
oh yeah, make sure you all wish the BU terriers luck on their march to the frozen 4. Big "Hockey East" championship game at 7 tonight. Guess I need to sober up so I can start emptying the fridge of beers again.
How's that corned beef and cabbage sitting this morning, brother-o-mine??
Good Morning Family!!! I am at the office this AM. Catching up on some work. I also snuck away so I didn't have to paint. Of course I had to check out the blog. I am in a pool for work. I am currently sitting in 12th place (out of 15). I had Syracuse in the final four. So that stinks!!! How is everyone feeling??
Cookie is in Delaware playing ball. Currently 40 degress. They lost both games yesterday. Don't worry. They should regroup.
oh DEAR LORD that was far too long away from the blog. There's been basketball games and birthdays and all sorts of events we've missed. Let's get to catching up!
I went to the Macon GA cherry blossom festival on Sunday and didn't see a single blossom. I did, however, see a lot of men in hot pink sportcoats. Neat!

man. I've missed you most of all, Jff. So, I may have some big news, and a big blog coming at the end of the month... wink wink, nudge nudge. So, a quick recap of my life since the blog went down. I'm in 1st place in the bracket at quincy high. Unfortunately, there is no monetary recompense for winning. In the cash bracket i'm down $36. Holtz luck. Go Wichita State!
does anyone else get the feeling that jimmy was using us?
Oh man all the blog sites were down, someone said it was a terrorist attack, do you guys think that was the case with your site. I have been very sad not being able to read about the family adventures.
It's ABOUT TIME!!! Fortunately the only thing that we missed out on was a bit of joshing relative to the round of 64. Did get to see Mom yesterday. Went to lunch and of course a stop at the bank for her to upgrade her stash for the trip and a stop at Wilson Farms to cash in and buy more scratchoffs. I hope for your sake that Texas has them. Extended weather forecast calls for 80;s while you are there. Good luck on food for her. She had an un-ketchuped, un-horseradished roast beef sandwich. I offered her a taste of my barbeque pork sandwich and she announced it far too "spicy" for her palate. I don't think that tex-mex is going to float her boat. Kristen can give tips on locating pie at 8 p.m. in a large city. Not sure that it will apply to a band b in the hinterlands. Jff, you made a good decision staying out of mano-a-mano. Currently your cousin Adam found a way to parlay himself into the negative 30's. K started slowly but quickly recouped and is plus money.
anonymous was right. If the terrorists really wanted to destroy our will to persevere as a nation, all they have to do is to destroy our blog sites.
Hey, I'm back. I started to wonder if the administrator of this blog was keeping me out for a reason.
Even in my "just pick 'em" bracket, I'm not doing that well.
Enjoyed St. Patrick's Day to the Enth degree. We took the kids to Shannon's Pub to enjoy food and drinks. Music, laughter, and fun for all.
Sabres better find their legs. I'm sure it's just a small hiccup in the best season ever.
Hey where have you guys been? I thought someone died or something.
who is winning cash in the NCAA games? did you ever throw in the 5 bucks and pick teams. who looks good this week. Duke? Missouri? Conn? I think it is up for grabs, who seconds that?
Thank,God!Unkie can once again occupy himself with the blog and leave me alone!!!
mmm. pre-tibial bone cyst. open faced club sand wedge.
PEDRO FOR PRESIDENT!!!
Bake her a cake... or something nice.
You can't beat Napolean Dynamite.
How come Thrllie is going to her Doctor's apartment? That seems ODD.
I have Nova winning it all. Duke loses this weekend.
What are you going to do today, Napoleon?
Whatever I feel like! Gosh!
No updates on things other than brackets for now, antie B. But be patient, there may be a blog coming in the future.
THANK GOD!! To be able to come upstairs in the morning and find the blog "alive and well", it ALMOST makes up for the fact that the ground is snow covered as the flurries continue to fly. It would be pretty if it were Dec. 22 and not March 22. I guess it is a good thing that you now at least know what the problem is with Jill's knee. How do you go about making it better? Glad to see that a few of the anonymous folk have continued to check in, but it has been a long time without Fargo, and the "anon-folk" need to remember that the invites to Holtzapalooza will be going out shortly and we will be compiling our A-List. Must be a sign of old age because I had never paid attention before, but it is really pretty disgusting to see people sitting across from you with the green food coloring on their lips from the St. Patty's beer.
welcome back to the cyberworld family! missed ya. GO ZAGS!!!
Adam Morrison, player of the year!
Best mustache in basektball!!!
Hi Family!!! I have been busy busy busy!! I can't wait to hear about Gram's trip to Texas. Mom has already been given the inservice on how to use a digital camera. So, needless to say; Grams head will be cut off in most pictures!!!
how do you know the green lips were from beer, and not a st. patty's day tryst with a leprechaun?
Those leprechauns have been known to KILL people!
Antie B, I'd pack some granola bars if I were you.
And bourbon.
I'm rooting for Wichita State. Provided they didn't lose last night when I wasn't watching.
New blog new blog!
I think its Adam's turn.
Albany fan checking in during lunch break, too cold and snowy to walk today. It was a heartbreaking loss, but I thought the danes had a great shot! it was by far the best game on all tournament.
not sure who to root for now, probably U Conn.. great to see you back on line, missed your daily adventures
It's good to be back.
GO ZAGS!!! Sure why not. I do love the 'stache'. Morrison kind of reminds me of, well, me ...in the 80's. Softest mustache in WNY.
I love coming home and turning on a spring baseball game.
Hints for your San Antonio trip: 1. stay away from local food
2. stay away from local drinks & 3. stay away from locals.
With this advise you should be fine.
Mom needs to go to the Alamo to see whether or not there is a basement. If you go and it is true that there is not one, do not go to a nearby movie theater, and if you do, don't sit near anyone with a trenchcoat on or near their lap. Albany--your Danes did all of the underdogs proud. And as far as my son's smutty remark relative to mouth rings, seems to me that he was out with his teaching cronies on St. Patty's day. Any stories to report???
New Blog!! New Blog!! I am getting too close to 100 comments.
Kristen, I think dad's finally had the "big one". What the hell was that all about? you lost me after the basement trenchcoat.
Good morning to all. Another day into March and the ground is still snow-covered. Hope that all goes well with Jill and the medical people. I trust that the April 1 blog about the Texas trip will contain more than just pictures of empty Manhattan glasses. I want a picture of Mom at a Spurs game sitting between Tim and Manu. Can you do it? Also a picture of her holding a jalapeno above her open mouth would be a great touch too. Maybe one of her wading nearby the Riverwalk? With so many on the road this weekend--Mom and sisses, Jill, Adam and Amy--everyone travel most carefully. Those of us snowbound in Wny will be thinking, enviously, of those in warmer climes.
and I'm leaving beautiful, sunny 50 degree weather for that?
Auntie B~ having traveled the road upon which you are about to embark I have two suggestions. #1. take headphones #2. wear clean underware!
frequent flyer checking in, I drop by on ocassion to see what controversial subject the family is tackling. As blogs are sometines tied to popular public opinion and can even change public opinion, I am curious what this family would do to change public opinion in there area of NY? This blog is very popular, it has come up more than once as blog of choice, and I think there is some real grass roots power here. For ex Tom Donohoe is now gone, and the perenial favorite Marv Levy is back..Did this blog force the change? Maybe
Change the world by starting in your own corner
I don't know. Changing the world seems like alot of work. And as #1 said, changing our underwear is a big deal for most of us.
I LOVE me some manhattans!
Frighteningly enough, I followed Dad's rambling about the Alamo. ITs an old song, adam. Google it. Everything except the trench coat part.
Everyone do travel safely!
Thank you for the clarification darling daughter. I had to toss in a PeeWee Herman allusion just for old times sake. We all know that The Alamo--not the car rental place--has no basement. Wow! Changing the world. I need help changing my socks. Thank God my son is coming home this weekend. I need my toenails clipped. A small price for him to pay for free room and board.
I love the Pee Wee Herman reference. Very funny, nice tie-in.
I'm not sure about changing the world. We Holtz's like to create our own lil' world and live in it safely with a cold refreshing beverage. Fences, you can never have enough fences. But, stop in anytime. Next week we're talking about granny smith apples.
KDH, did you like the Tedeschi concert?
Who wins tonight??? Big game.
Okay, I have hockey tonight but I'll be able to watch most of the LSU/ Duke game.
LSU wins tonight.
I fought being comment 100 (I have to live with the man and his big ego) but I couldn't help it. First~ Auntie B I meant underWEAR. Second~Jeff, I love Tedeschi if you mean Susan. Why? Is she coming to Holtzapalooza?
Wait! Maybe this is comment 100!!!
jff, why didn't you tell me earlier that LSU was going to take Duke. You could have saved me some money. Thank you Auntie P for putting me "over the top". That only goes to prove how stale this blog entry has become. We need fresh meat!! come on, somebody do something interesting. I guess that we will just have to wait patiently for the return of the Texas Travellers. And apologies to Susan, but cousin Frankie Fronczak refuses to appear with her. Apparently some long ago disagreement about position on a program and he harbors a grudge.
Well, just to keep the family informed, I tore my achilles tendon last night playing hockey. How'd it happen? I wish I knew. No one was even near me, it felt like someone slashed me and I heard a loud boom in my head.
So I'm having surgery today at 2 o'clock. Yeah, me!
Full cast for 6 weeks and then a walking cast for another 4. Actually, I saw all the sympathy that Thrllie was getting and you know how jealous I get. Well, I think I out did myself this time.
I'm sorry, Unckie C about Duke, I should have told you about LSU winning.
I gave Kristen a Susan Tedschi concert. I'll burn it for you Aunt Patty. It's a good one, you'll like it.
oh no jeff -- I'm so sorry to hear it! But I think that means that Sandra is on the hook to wait on you hand and foot. Going to have to check the regs on that one.
I think a trip to Pizza Hut is in your future, young man.
seriously, sorry to hear about the war wound. Heal quick.
When someone's will is strong enough a man will do anything. I'm here, downstairs ready to blog and tell my story.
Good Morning family!!! Well now that my mom is gone, we can finally talk about her. I packed her luggage this morning extra special. I spoke to Gram last night, she showered and bought new deodrant. Jeff, you are my hero. I admire your will to conquer.
Well, since my mother is gone this week; PARTY at my house!!
